Monterey's auto reunion

Audi air-freighted an impressive stock from its historic collection to California for the Monterey Historic Races on August 27-29. The locals were stunned by five Auto Unions including the sensational streamliner replica. As well as a stylish exhibition under cover in the paddock, these mid-engined racers were presented with specially commisioned paintings by John Gable as backdrops. Out on the track Audi chairman Dr. Paefgen demonstrated the V-16 C-type with Le Mans ace Rinaldo Capello in the V12 D-type.

On Sunday it was Frank Biela's turn in the C-type when the D-type developed gearbox problems. America showed its enthusiasm for Audi when more than 200 Quattros invaded the track including two short-wheelbase Sport models. And making the trip from Brazil were three rare DKW-Vermag GT Malzoni coupés. Emerson Fittipaldi cut his teeth racing in these attractive glassfibre cars.
